Austin Animal Center

The new shelter location at Levander Loop includes beautiful large trees and historic buildings.  The site of the former Texas Blind, Deaf and Orphan School, a charity-sponsored school for black children prior to 1965, the City of Austin owns the 44-acre campus and operates several services there already, including the Vital Records Department.  The new shelter will mirror the existing Quonset-hut style gymnasium, while reusing bricks and other materials from campus buildings that have been demolished.  Sustainable and green-building techniques will be employed extensively, from solar panels to rainwater collection to artificial K-9 grass in the dog runs.
