Coming soon – Hard Luck Hounds!
Watch for information on this new program to help long-stay dogs.

Thanks to the efforts of all the Friends out there, FoAAC was able to donate over $1000 of warm, snuggly beds to the shelter dogs and cats - which were right in time for several below-freezing nights!

Update:  Austin City Council passed the no-kill plan! To read more go to:
http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/cityhall/entries/2010/03/11/nokill_plan_passes_1.html

These documents were used to present a no-kill plan to the City Council.  On March 11, 2010, the Austin City Council unanimously approved the no-kill plan as outlined in the documents. (Note:  Friends of TLAC was not involved in drafting or discussing these documents.  We do not seek to influence shelter policy; we seek to provide additional financial support for various shelter needs.)

To the right
are the draft documents related to the development of the animals services implementation plan for reducing animal intake and increasing live animal outcomes.

These documents in their present draft form are being sent to the members of the Animal Advisory Commission and grouplists of the animal services community. They will be posted for public review on the city website.

Following this review the Austin Animal Advisory Commission
will finalize the documents and forward to Mayor and Council as requested on March 1, 2010. The report is scheduled for review by the Public Health and Human Services Subcommittee on March 1.

The Austin Animal Advisory Commission wishes to acknowledge the extensive work of the commission members, other stakeholders and staff in this important project.

FoTLAC President Mindy standing in front of the boxes of plush beds.
Just in time for the coldest part of the winter in January 2010, we donated plush beds for the outdoor dog kennels.  The three sizes of beds fit nicely onto the Kuranda beds that were donated the previous year.  The beds have raised sides so that smaller and short-coated dogs can snuggle up and stay warm!

In response to a request from the Animal Services Supervisor Friends of Town Lake Animal Center purchased and donated $2500 worth of Kuranda dog beds.  The elevated beds help keep the dogs cool in the summer and warm in the winter.  Aluminum legs are sturdy enough to support the larger dogs and ensure that aggressive chewers cannot destroy the beds.

The cement kennels can get very cold on winter nights! We funded fleece dog and cat beds to help keep everyone warm and cozy.

FoTLAC purchased and donated to TLAC training materials for use by volunteers and employees. Training dogs (and some cats) helps keep the animals mentally stimulated, making them happier and more adoptable.

We provide collars and leashes for distribution at various Outreach events, especially the Rabies Clinic. The Rabies Vaccination Clinic provides free rabies vaccinations to cats and dogs (and even ferrets!) in underserved areas of Austin and Travis County. Hundreds of animals receive vaccinations at these clinics. Many pets are brought with only a rope or chain for a leash, and many have no collar at all on which to hang the rabies tag and City of Austin registration tag. By donating the leashes and collars to TLAC for this event, FoTLAC helps to encourage responsible pet ownership in the community.

Aromatherapy garden at TLAC near the dog kennels.

Friends of TLAC installed dog "pharmacies", or aromatherapy gardens, at several places around TLAC. These gardens contain plants and herbs pleasing to both dogs and people. The carefully selected combinations of plants provide therapeutic benefits to the dogs, such as calming and boosting their immune systems. Volunteers and visitors give dogs the opportunity to sniff, lick, and even chew the plants by walking the dogs to the gardens. The dogs in their kennels benefit from the herbs as they can pick up the scents from the plants. The pharmacies create further volunteer opportunities for groups and individuals who enjoy helping out the animals through gardening, and they enhance the shelter atmosphere for visitors, employees, and volunteers.
